20 UK Scholarships for International Students in 2024

What is a scholarship?

A scholarship is a form of financial aid awarded to students to help them pursue their education. It is typically based on academic achievement, talent, or financial need. Scholarships can come from a variety of sources, including schools, organizations, companies, or government entities. Receiving a scholarship can greatly reduce the financial burden of attending school and can open up opportunities for students to focus on their studies without worrying about the cost. In addition to providing financial support, scholarships can also recognize and reward students for their hard work and dedication.

Academic scholarships come in various forms, each designed to support students in their educational pursuits. Some common types of academic scholarships include:

  1. Merit-Based Scholarships: These scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement, such as high grades or standardized test scores. Examples include the National Merit Scholarship and the Presidential Scholarship.

  2. Need-Based Scholarships: These scholarships are awarded to students based on financial need. Examples include the Pell Grant and the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant.

  3. Athletic Scholarships: These scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who demonstrate exceptional talent in sports. Examples include scholarships offered by colleges and universities for various sports programs.

  4. Subject-Specific Scholarships: These scholarships are awarded to students pursuing a particular field of study. Examples include the STEM Scholarship for students studying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

  5. Diversity Scholarships: These scholarships are awarded to students from underrepresented backgrounds or minority groups. Examples include the Gates Millennium Scholars Program and the Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship. By exploring the different types of academic scholarships available, students can find opportunities that align with their strengths, goals, and financial needs.
